It is here a strong cause, that of the planet, which motivated one hundred and sixty two artists to engage together in a collective creation, showing the 130 heads of state who failed in Copenhagen that it is absolutely necessary and possible to cooperate fruitfully to save the planet. At the same time, they contradict two preconceived ideas: one which depicts artists as frenzied individualists, the other which only sees nature from the angle of aesthetics - the forest of summer tourism - and not its crucial contribution to a global balance.

“Vert Carbone” installation: instructions for use

First the name: it is simple and seems a paradox because everyone thinks that carbon is black, received idea, just look at a diamond, it is not black! Conversely, all the carbon in the living world has passed through the green of a leaf or a pine needle, coming from the CO2 in the air to constitute our matter. Biological carbon, therefore ourselves, is intimately green by its origin.
For the material realization: the slogan inscribed on the 200 cubes (1 m3 of wood captures 1 ton of CO2) was chosen for its meaning, of course, but here it is also shaped by a repetition that pursues a deliberately hypnotic goal , like a litany, a psalmody that penetrates deeply. It says two things at once: the tree captures carbon from the air and the wood stores this carbon to prevent it from going back into the atmosphere. The formula is deliberately elliptical, invites reflection and not explanation.
Because this installation is only the beginning of a path, where everyone enters by the way they want. It is the meaning of this progression of cubes, no matter how green we wear, what matters is the path we take. It is not interesting to make citizens feel guilty, but to make them start. Here the path leads to the wooden footbridge by the artist Kawamata.

This installation is a miniature: it would have had to be extended 200,000 times to represent the 42 million tonnes of wood that fell with the KLAUS storm. It is also minimal, has no sound or lighting.

Vert Carbone has two particularities: a gradation of green and a gradation of size. The largest cubes are the most intense in the green, here the primary green taken in RGB space (0.255.0), that of 21st century digital, and the smaller ones are in a very light green (also RGB) .

The scenography, linear and curved, a spatial stretch of a thousand meters including the gradations described, plays on several paradoxes. Variations in size can only be seen up close, while variations in color can only be seen from afar. The gaze is thus brought to embrace all the scales, as for our relationship to the planet, which we can only see in full by moving away and which we can only know well on the local scale.
The composition made of discontinuity, by isolated cubes separated by five meters, leaving the passage of the machines of cleaning of the city, finds a continuity as soon as the glance is carried obliquely on the axis of the green line. Isolated cubes blend into each other. Each has its own identity, colour, size, but integrated into a global gesture, carrying unity and meaning.

The artists :

The artists of the network see a great interest in getting closer to the economic world, in finding together new paths towards creativity, innovation and the necessary changes in our way of life. With the Art.Aquitaine network they have set up, they are looking for new partners in the economic world.
